Who does the movie trailer voiceovers and what kind of money do they make?They don't call Don LaFontaine "King of the Movie Trailers" for nothing. LaFontaine's bio lists more than 4,000 films -- and that's not even counting the television commercials, network promos, and documentaries. It probably won't surprise you to learn he's a multimillionaire.
But don't go searching for an agent just yet. According to The Voice Factory, a voice-over coaching and casting company, landing that fabulous national television campaign or movie trailer takes talent, training...and luck. Voice actors in the film industry have the Screen Actors Guild and its pay scale going to bat for them, giving them a little extra help. Successful actors might even win a Golden Trailer for their efforts.
Because a movie's eventual success weighs so heavily on its trailer, it's not likely producers will take a chance on a novice, especially with people like LaFontaine hogging all the jobs. And he's not giving them up. In an interview with the Chicago Tribune, his advice to budding voice-over talent: "Wait `til I die."
