Public transportation, it's a great invention if the busses and trains ride on schedule. Unfortunately that is not the case in most countries.

In Japan it certainly is the case so maybe that's why people bring along things on the bus that can provide some comfort while waiting for the bus to arrive and on the long rides to school or work.
